How HipScaler Works

Back

HipScaler Radiographer Instructions

  1. Position patient supine as you would normally for an AP pelvic x-ray.
  2. Place the "HipScaler" flat against the outer edge of the patient's proximal thigh with the longer edge of the device vertical.
  3. Rotate and/or Flip the "HipScaler" so that the most proximal metal disc is at or as near as possible to the level of the greater trochanter (Fig 1).
  4. Then remove the "HipScaler", keeping it in exactly the same orientation, and place it vertically in between the patient's legs as proximal as possible (Fig 2).
  5. Take the x-ray as normal
  6. The most proximal metal disc should be clearly visible in profile on the x-ray, as a white line/ellipse just inferior to the pubic symphysis (Fig 3).
